I Think I'm in Love...

... with a sweater.

This sweater. This beauty recently graced our screens in the BBC adaptation of  Winifred Holtby's "South Riding", and as I brought the DVD of this away with me today I had to opportunity to rekindle my love of the fabulous costumes in this show. In particular said sweater. Which I now have a rather unhealthy obsession with. But, I mean, just LOOK at it...

Beautiful colours, beautiful lacy design

Still beautiful from the back

Beautiful front detailing

If I could recreate this sweater I think I would be the happiest person that ever lived. Quite possibly. Of course I'm trying to be organised with the projects that I'm taking on at the minute, not just making things because I like the look of them, but making things that I actually need. But surely there's room in my wardrobe for something as pretty as this:

Le swoon, Le sigh

I've yet to take a look at the knitting section of my "Make-Not-Buy Challenge" but this sweater is going on the definite maybe list until further notice! And just in case I do decided that I can't live without it I thought I might as well try and find a suitable pattern. Just in case... :)

All patterns found here on this fabulous site

What do you think of these options? At the moment I think that the Jumper in Feather Stitch may be my favourite, but I'd love to hear your thoughts! I may yet find a pattern that is closer to the original, I'm going to keep looking. If you know of or come across anything similar do let me know :)

Bye for now, and a Happy Weekend to you all!

If you have the book "A Stitch in Time," I think the "sun-ray ribbing" pattern is very similar to this sweater, but with two colors and a different neck.

Ashley B - Thanks for the tip, I do have that book and LOVE it, I'll be sure to give it a look when I'm back home, thanks again!

kitchen bumpkin - I know, I'm totally obsessed with it :) Glad you like it too!

Le swoon indeed! Vintage sweaters, especially from the 30s and 40s, can pretty much do no wrong. This peachy pink and grey one is wonderful!

Tis pretty, I agree. She could look a little happier in it couldn't she? Sadly my knitting abilities begin and end with scarves (and a pair of very dubious legwarmers) but I do have much love for old sewing and knitting patterns - so appealing. I have some delightful 70s and 80s ones which I also keep for the horrific pictures ;-)

I will keep my eye open for you on my many charity shop jaunts

Emily & Gracie - I totally agree, as a rule 30s/40s knitwear is just stunning, that's probably why I spend so much of my time trying to recreate it!

LandGirl1980 - I'm still swooning now!

Lakota - With knitting I find practice makes perfect, I cant even remember the amount of uglies I produced that I never even wore! I bet your scarves are beautiful :) Thanks for keeping a look out for me!

Gosh, I wish I could see the front up close more! The back keyhole would be easy, and the colors would be easy as the stripes aren't too wide so you could just carry the unused color along the back, alternating color per stripe.

It looks like the stitch pattern on the yoke changes probably right after the armhole bind off, when the pink stripes get skinnier. That would be the harder part figuring out. The blue stripes on the yoke almost look like garter stitch, or almost slightly ruched.

You could always start a thread on Ravelry soliciting opinions, lots of people do that for movie/tv knits they see and want to try and recreate! :)

Tasha - you truly are my knitting guru, I was just thinking about doing a sort of copy of the sweater using a close-enough pattern, and you smash those ideas by thinking of an actual replica of my own making! You're awesome, you rock my world. I'm off to make a thread right now, you have inspired me! Thanks for broadening my horizons, I love a challenge :)

Oh, I can't stop thinking about this sweater either! A friend of mine gave me the link to your blog post and I am so glad of the options here! I think the feather stitch sweater is a good option. The yoke though...
I was thinking of modifying Audrey in Unst as a pullover with keyhole in the back and something like that feather stitch, but it's a lot of modifying...
I'll keep an eye on your quest for the perfect pattern!

Hi Lieke, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who obsesses over this sweater! I'm actually looking at ways to make my own pattern for this sweater now, I've spoken to a couple of people and it looks fairly simple on paper, whether or not it would work in practice is another thing! I'll be sure to post on my blog when I make some headway so be sure to check back :) Thanks for your comment and hopefully we'll both end up with a version of this gorgeous sweater some day :)

oh I fell in love with this jumper too when I first saw it, I tried to figure out how re-create it but its a bit (read way) beyond my pattern creating skills! I look forward to seeing what you come up with!!!
